Max Verstappen set the second-fastest time in the first free practice for the Grand Prix of Spain.
The Dutchman from Red Bull came in his fastest lap at the circuit of Catalonia in Barcelona to 1.18.537. The Finn Valtteri Bottas was a fraction faster in his Mercedes: 1.18.504.
Verstappen’s Mexican teammate Sergio Pérez did not get further than the ninth fastest time, with 1.19.349. Lewis Hamilton, the British reigning Mercedes world champion, set the third-fastest time.
The Spanish GP is the fourth race of the season. Hamilton won the opening race in Bahrain, Verstappen was the best in the Emilia-Romagna GP, and Hamilton was again the best in Portugal.
In the world championship, Hamilton has 8 points more than Verstappen.
