According to the Paris public prosecutor, the “monster of the Ardennes”, the French serial killer Michel Fourniret, died on Monday at the age of 79.
At the time of death, Fourniret was serving two life sentences for the murder of eight people.
Fourniret was in Fresnes prison in Paris but was admitted to a hospital in that city on April 28. He was in critical condition and had difficulty breathing.
The prosecutor has announced that the death of the convicted murderer is under investigation.
The man was convicted in 2008 of the kidnapping, rape and murder of seven young women and girls in France and Belgium between 1987 and 2001. His ex-wife was sentenced to life for complicity.
After the conviction, Fourniret was found guilty of five more murders and disappearances. In 2018 he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
