Switzerland breaks off negotiations for a cooperation agreement with the European Union. “Significant disagreements remain at key points,” said a Swiss government spokesman.
Switzerland, which is not part of the EU, and the union have made all kinds of agreements over the years.
As a result, the Alpine country, entirely surrounded by the EU, is in practice part of the common European market. But the Swiss have been negotiating a comprehensive treaty with the EU since 2018.
Within this, expiring agreements would be extended, and new ones would be given a place.
However, more and more Swiss people were hoping against the treaty. It would affect Swiss sovereignty.
