Toyota Takes The Lead Over VW As The World’s Largest Car Maker

Japanese automaker Toyota is well on track to become the world’s largest automaker for the third year in a row by 2022.

Over the first four months of this year, Toyota has sold a million more cars than big rival Volkswagen (VW). This was reported by the financial news agency Bloomberg on Monday.

Although both car makers in China were impacted by the corona lockdowns, Toyota was able to limit the damage better. The Japanese automaker saw global new car deliveries decline 5.8 percent over the first four months of the year, while German automaker VW suffered a 26 percent drop.

Volkswagen is struggling this year in China, its largest market, where the car company saw deliveries fall by 30 percent in April.

The German company also has a much larger presence than Toyota in western Europe, where the Russian invasion of Ukraine has further disrupted already stressed supply chains.
